The legal bit, in plain English
Every car in the UK must be insured unless it's been declared off the road with a SORN. Parked on the street, sat on your driveway, or out on the road, it makes no difference. Driving without insurance carries a £300 fixed penalty and six licence points, and if it reaches court, an unlimited fine and possible disqualification. The police can also seize the car on the spot, which is exactly how vehicles end up in the compounds our impound team deals with every day.
Third-party only is the legal minimum: it pays for damage or injury you cause to other people, and nothing for your own car. Third-party fire and theft adds cover if your car is stolen or burns. Comprehensive protects your car too, covering accident damage, vandalism and windscreens, and is what around three-quarters of UK drivers choose. It isn't always the most expensive option either, so it's worth quoting all three.
Why quote through a broker instead of a comparison site?
For a standard car on a clean licence, comparison sites do a reasonable job. Where they fall down is everything else: imports, modifications, business use, non-UK licences, claims history, or a car that simply doesn't fit the drop-down menus. Those forms force your circumstances into a generic box, and the price comes back wrong, or the cover quietly doesn't fit.
Vehicle Cover is an FCA-regulated broker with access to a panel of leading UK insurers, including specialist schemes that never appear on comparison websites. You explain your situation once, to a person, and we present it to insurers properly. If your circumstances are straightforward, we'll tell you that too: quotes are free and there's no obligation either way.
What affects your premium
Insurers price on your age and driving experience, claims history, postcode, annual mileage, how you use the car, and the car's insurance group, a scale from 1 to 50. A Vauxhall Corsa in group 1 costs a fraction of a Range Rover Sport in group 50 to insure. If you're choosing between cars, it's worth a call before you buy: five minutes on the phone can save a year of inflated premiums.
- Optional extras worth weighing: breakdown cover, motor legal expenses, key cover (replacements can top £200), courtesy car and windscreen protection
- No claims bonus protection keeps your discount intact after a fault claim
- EU and international licence holders: premiums can run higher, but we work with insurers who price them fairly

See all FAQsWhat types of car insurance can I choose from?
Three main levels. Comprehensive covers you, your car, your passengers and third parties, including theft, vandalism and fire. Third-party fire and theft covers other people plus your car if it's stolen or fire-damaged. Third-party only is the legal minimum and covers other people and their property, not your car. Around three-quarters of UK drivers go comprehensive, and it's not always the priciest option, so quote all three before deciding.
How are car insurance premiums calculated?
Insurers weigh your age, driving experience, claims history, postcode, annual mileage, what you use the car for, and the car's insurance group (1 to 50). Lower-group cars like a Vauxhall Corsa cost far less to insure than high-performance vehicles. We compare quotes across our panel so you don't have to re-type your details into site after site.
Can I get car insurance with a non-UK licence?
Yes. We arrange car insurance for EU and international licence holders regularly. Some insurers treat non-UK licences as higher risk and price accordingly, so we place these through specialists who rate them more fairly. Call 01323 416706 and we'll talk through your options.
Will modifications make my car uninsurable?
No, but they can make it uninsurable on a comparison site, because generic forms don't handle modified vehicles well. We arrange cover for modified and non-standard cars through specialist underwriters. Declare every modification honestly: undeclared mods are one of the most common reasons claims get refused.
What optional extras can I add?
Breakdown cover for roadside assistance, motor legal expenses for claiming back losses after a non-fault accident, key cover (replacement keys can cost over £200), windscreen protection, courtesy car cover, and no claims bonus protection. We'll tell you which are worth having for your circumstances, not just add everything.
What happens if I drive without insurance?
A £300 fixed penalty and six points at the roadside; an unlimited fine and possible disqualification if it goes to court. The police can also seize the vehicle immediately. If that's already happened, our impounded car insurance team arranges the 30-day policy compounds require for release, same-day certificate included.
