What you get

  • 30-day third-party policy for international licence holders
  • CID code certificate emailed within minutes
  • EU and international driving licences accepted
  • Available online or over the phone

What's not covered

  • Driving on an international licence after 12 months of UK residency: you'll need a named driver policy instead
  • Compound storage fees and the release fee
  • Vehicle release without the required documents (seizure notice, V5C, proof of valid licence, MOT, proof of address)
  • Comprehensive cover: this is third-party only

Not sure whether your licence still counts? That's exactly what the first phone call is for: we check before you pay for anything.

The 12-month rule, in plain English

You can drive in the UK on a valid international licence for up to 12 months from the date you became a UK resident. Inside that window, a standard impound policy in your own name works: we arrange the 30-day cover with CID code, you take it to the compound, and the vehicle is released to you.

Past 12 months, your international licence is no longer valid for driving on UK roads, which means you can't take out a standard impound policy or drive the vehicle out yourself. The route instead is named driver impound insurance: a qualified UK licence holder is added to your policy and collects the vehicle on your behalf. Buying the wrong one wastes money and a trip to the compound, so we confirm your position before quoting.

Who this cover is for

Recent arrivals to the UK, foreign students driving on their home licence, EU licence holders with ongoing validity, and longer-term residents who've just discovered their licence position has changed: we see all of them, and we place cover for valid licences from most countries.

The key requirement is that your licence is still valid for driving in the UK: under 12 months of UK residency, or an EU licence with ongoing validity. If you're unsure which side of the line you're on, call 01323 416706 and the team will confirm it in minutes.

What the compound will ask for

Alongside the insurance certificate with its CID code, UK compounds will want to see your paperwork, and for international licence holders, proof that the licence is valid matters more than usual:

  • Your seizure notice (Form 3708)
  • The V5C logbook proving ownership
  • Proof of your valid driving licence
  • A valid MOT certificate and proof of address
  • Payment for the compound's release fee
  • Over the 12-month limit? You don't need to exchange your licence before getting cover; a named driver policy releases the car while you sort the DVLA exchange
● THE 12-MONTH RULE

The right policy depends on how long you've been here

An international licence is valid for UK driving for 12 months from the date you became a UK resident. Which side of that line you're on decides the policy you need, and buying the wrong one wastes money and a trip to the compound.

  • We confirm your licence validity before quoting
  • Standard or named driver: we arrange whichever applies
  • DVLA exchange guidance if your licence has lapsed

Can I get impound insurance with a foreign driving licence?

Yes. We arrange impound insurance for international and European licence holders, online or by phone on 01323 416706. Cover depends on your residency status and whether your licence is still valid for driving in the UK, which we check before quoting.

Which international licences are accepted?

Valid international and European licences from most countries. The key requirement is that the licence is still valid for UK driving, meaning you've been a UK resident for less than 12 months, or you hold an EU licence with ongoing validity. Unsure? Call 01323 416706 and the team will confirm.

What is the 12-month rule?

You can drive in the UK on a valid international licence for up to 12 months from the date you became a UK resident. After 12 months it's no longer valid for UK roads, so if your car is impounded past that point, you'll need named driver impound insurance, where a qualified UK licence holder collects the vehicle on your behalf.

My international licence has lapsed in the UK. What now?

If you've been a UK resident for more than 12 months, you can't take out a standard impound policy in your own name. The fix is a named driver policy: a qualified UK licence holder is added and collects the car. Call 01323 416706 and we'll arrange it by phone.

Do I need to exchange my foreign licence before getting cover?

No, provided you've been a UK resident for under 12 months and your licence is still valid, no exchange is needed to get impound insurance. If you're past 12 months, you should apply to exchange your licence through the DVLA, but you don't have to wait: a named driver policy gets the car released in the meantime.

What documents will the compound ask for?

Your seizure notice (Form 3708), the V5C logbook, proof of your valid driving licence, a valid MOT certificate, proof of address, and the release fee, plus the insurance certificate with CID code that we email you. We send a full checklist with every policy.

Your licence isn't the obstacle you think it is
