Goods in transit insurance: the van policy covers the van, this covers what's inside it
If a parcel is damaged, stolen or lost on your watch, you can be held personally liable for the full cost; vehicle insurance won't pay a penny towards it. Goods in transit cover protects the cargo itself, from £92.60 a year for £10,000 of cover.
- Cover levels of £10,000, £25,000 or £50,000
- £50,000 auto-included for major network drivers
- European territorial limits and CMR cover as standard

This policy sits alongside your courier or van insurance, not instead of it; the vehicle still needs its own hire and reward cover.
Why the cargo needs its own cover
Your courier or van policy insures the vehicle. It does not insure the goods inside it, so if items are damaged, stolen or lost during a delivery, the cost of putting that right can land on you personally. For a courier carrying other people's parcels all day, that's an open-ended liability riding in the back of the van.
Goods in transit insurance isn't a legal requirement, but most courier networks and clients expect you to hold it, and going without means carrying that liability yourself. Our policies are designed for couriers, parcel delivery companies and light haulage businesses, with cover levels of £10,000, £25,000 or £50,000 to match the loads you carry.
What comes as standard
One policy covers up to 10 vehicles, each up to 8.25 tonnes. European territorial limits and CMR cover are included as standard, so cross-Channel work doesn't need a separate arrangement, and hand-held scanner cover up to £1,000 protects the kit most delivery contracts make you responsible for. Sub-contractor cover is included up to 20% of annual turnover.
Cover is underwritten by Chubb Insurance, and public liability and employer's liability can be added as optional extensions, all under the same policy, so there's one renewal and one point of contact for the lot.
Driving for a major network? £50,000 is included free
If you deliver for TNT, FedEx, Parcelforce, DHL, Yodel, UK Mail, Amazon, DPD or Hermes, £50,000 of goods in transit cover is automatically included at no additional charge, the level those networks' contracts typically demand, without paying extra to reach it.
Not on that list? Choose the £10,000, £25,000 or £50,000 level that fits your loads, starting from £92.60 a year, and we'll confirm what your network or clients actually require before you buy.
Protection for the load, from £92.60 a year
£10,000 of goods in transit cover starts from £92.60 per year, a small line on the books next to being personally liable for a lost consignment. Higher levels of £25,000 and £50,000 are available, and major-network drivers get £50,000 included automatically.
- £10,000, £25,000 or £50,000 cover levels
- Up to 10 vehicles on one policy
- Public and employer's liability can be added under the same policy

See all FAQsWhat is goods in transit insurance?
Cover for the cargo you transport against damage, loss, theft and delayed delivery. It's separate from your vehicle insurance, which covers the van but not what's inside it, and it protects you against personal liability for items in your care. Call 01323 416706 for a quote.
Is goods in transit insurance a legal requirement?
No, but it's strongly recommended. Without it you could be held personally liable for the full cost of goods damaged or lost during delivery, and most courier networks and clients expect you to hold it before they'll give you work.
How much does goods in transit insurance cost?
Prices start from £92.60 per year for £10,000 of cover, with £25,000 and £50,000 levels available. Call 01323 416706 or send the form for an exact price on your setup.
Does it cover work for Amazon, DPD and Hermes?
Yes, and better than that. For drivers working with TNT, FedEx, Parcelforce, DHL, Yodel, UK Mail, Amazon, DPD or Hermes, £50,000 of goods in transit cover is automatically included at no additional charge.
Can I add public liability to a goods in transit policy?
Yes. Public liability and employer's liability can both be added as optional extensions under the same policy: one renewal covering the cargo and the liability exposures around your delivery work.
How many vehicles can go on one policy?
Up to 10 vehicles on a single goods in transit policy, each up to 8.25 tonnes maximum authorised mass. For larger or heavier operations, talk to us and we'll find the right arrangement.
