Taxi Insurance — Private Hire & Public Hire Cover

Taxi insurance is a legal requirement for anyone driving a taxi for a living. A standard private car insurance policy will not cover you — you need a specialist policy that protects you, your vehicle, and your passengers. Whether you drive a private hire minicab, a licensed black cab, or an Uber vehicle, Vehicle Cover will find the right taxi insurance at a competitive price.

At Vehicle Cover, we have access to a wide panel of specialist taxi insurers, allowing us to offer competitive quotes for private hire and public hire drivers across the UK. Our policies include £5 million public liability cover as standard, a comprehensive 24/7 claims service, driver assault cover, and replacement vehicle for non-fault accidents. We also offer unique Day Driver schemes for vehicles operating between 4am and 10pm only.

We cover all taxi types — private hire minicabs, hackney carriages, black cabs, MPVs, people carriers, and PCO-licensed vehicles. Flexible payment options are available with premiums spread across monthly instalments.

Taxi Insurance Types

Private hire insurance covers taxis that must be pre-booked in advance, including most minicabs, MPVs, and taxis used as people carriers. It does not cover picking up customers without a booking from places such as train stations or taxi ranks.

PCO insurance applies to PCO-licensed taxis. PCO stands for Public Carriage Office, the Transport for London division that licenses black cabs and minicabs in London.

Public hire taxi insurance covers taxis that customers can hail on the street or pick up at a taxi rank. These vehicles can display a taxi sign, and only public hire taxi insurance covers picking up customers without a booking.

Uber and App-Based Drivers

Private hire insurance is the most suitable cover for drivers working for Uber and similar operators. Insurers will usually treat app-based drivers as operating a taxi service, so standard private car insurance is not enough.

Eligibility and Operating Area

Many taxi insurance providers will only offer cover if you have held a valid driving licence for at least 12 months, meet the insurer's minimum age requirement, and hold a valid taxi licence.

When applying, you need to confirm your operating area. You may not be covered to work outside that area, and the level of cover available can depend on where you are registered and where you operate.

  • You need a valid taxi licence
  • You usually need at least 12 months' driving licence history
  • Most policies require drivers to be over 21, with some requiring 25 or over
  • Some insurers require a clean criminal record
  • Check your working area before applying

Cover Levels and Optional Extras

Taxi insurance offers the same main protection levels as standard motor cover: fully comprehensive, third party fire and theft, and third party only.

Public liability insurance protects you if a customer suffers personal injury or property damage while in, entering, or leaving your taxi. Most taxi insurance policies include this cover as standard, but the policy should still be checked carefully.

Personal use cover is needed if you plan to use your taxi day to day when you are not working. If you want your partner to use the vehicle, check that your local authority allows unregistered drivers to drive licensed taxis.

Unlimited mileage can matter because taxi drivers often cover many miles each year. Breakdown cover and legal cover are also important options to consider for taxi work.
