Why your car policy won't cover a fare
Taxi insurance is a legal requirement for anyone driving a taxi for a living. The moment you carry a passenger for payment, you're working for hire and reward, and that's excluded from every standard private car policy. Drive on one anyway and your insurance is effectively void.
The policy you need depends on how you work. Private hire covers pre-booked work: minicabs, and app drivers on Uber or Bolt, who insurers classify as private hire operators. Public hire covers hackney carriages and black cabs that can ply for trade and be hailed in the street. PCO insurance covers TfL-licensed vehicles in London. We arrange all of them, across all taxi types: minicabs, hackney carriages, black cabs, MPVs and people carriers.
What's built into every taxi policy
Carrying passengers brings risks a private policy never has to think about, so our taxi policies include £5 million public liability cover as standard, protecting you if a passenger or member of the public is injured while using your vehicle. Driver assault cover is included too, and the 24/7/365 claims service provides a replacement vehicle after a non-fault accident, so an incident doesn't take you off the road.
Choose comprehensive, third-party fire and theft, or third-party only, and spread the premium across monthly instalments if that suits your cash flow better than one annual payment.
Day Driver schemes, and what you'll need to quote
If your taxi only works between 4am and 10pm, ask about our Day Driver schemes: insurers price the daytime-only risk lower, which can mean a reduced premium for vehicles that never do the late-night shift.
To get a quote moving, have these to hand:
- A driving licence held for at least 12 months
- Your valid taxi licence
- Details of the vehicle you drive
- Your operating area
- Most insurers require drivers to be aged 21 or over

See all FAQsWhat types of taxi insurance do you offer?
Private hire insurance for minicabs and app drivers (Uber, Bolt), public hire insurance for hackney carriages and black cabs, PCO insurance for TfL-licensed vehicles, and taxi fleet insurance for operators running two or more vehicles. Call 01323 416706 and we'll match the policy to how you work.
Is public liability included in taxi insurance?
Yes. Every taxi policy we arrange includes £5 million public liability cover as standard. It protects you if a passenger or a member of the public is injured while using your vehicle, a risk private car insurance never has to price for.
Do Uber drivers need taxi insurance?
Yes. Insurers classify Uber, Bolt and similar app-based drivers as private hire operators, so you need a private hire policy; standard car insurance won't cover you while you're working. Call 01323 416706 for a private hire quote.
What is a Day Driver scheme?
A reduced-premium scheme for taxis that operate between 4am and 10pm only. If your vehicle is never used for hire and reward outside those hours, the insurer prices the lower risk accordingly. Ask the team on 01323 416706 whether your hours qualify.
Can I pay for taxi insurance monthly?
Yes. We offer flexible payment options with the premium spread across equal monthly instalments, so you don't have to find the full annual amount upfront.
What do I need to get a taxi insurance quote?
A driving licence held for at least 12 months, a valid taxi licence, your vehicle details and your operating area. Most insurers require drivers to be 21 or over. Call 01323 416706 or send the form and we'll take it from there.
